Purpose
To obtain a position which challenges me to grow
my skills in the fields of computer security, information technology,
and the administration of state-of-the-art computation hardware.
Education
1993-1996
California State Polytechnic University of Pomona
- Computer Information Systems major. (Degree incomplete)
Certifications (provided by
Brainbench.com for NASA Jan. 2, 2008)
Experience
March 3, 2008 - present Senior IT security / Unix Systems Administrator for the Communications Architectures and Research Section at NASA/JPL. On February 29th (leap year), 2008 I quit my contract position with Columbus Technologies and Services and was was hired directly to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a CalTech employee.
August 2000 - Feburary 29, 2008 Unix System
Administrator for Columbus Technologies and Services, Inc.,
contracted to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). At JPL, I am
the sole administrator of five separate NIS domains, consisting of
around 40 Sun
workstations/servers and about 40 Linux
workstations. One of the NIS domains under my responsibility is a
network which provides computing resources for data acquisition by
the Goldstone Solar System Radar, centered around a 70-meter
telescope in the California high desert north of Barstow. Another
domain provides data analysis computing resources for research on
asteroids which closely approach the Earth. I am also the
administrator of a 34-node Linux "grid" computer, using Sun
Microsystems Grid Engine software. Other technologies used include:
OpenSSH, NFS, OpenLDAP, Perl, and Bash scripting. I also maintain
multiple Sendmail and Postfix e-mail servers which use Tripwire to
detect intruders and SpamAssassin to reduce unwanted emails.
In addition to Unix systems administration and
integration, I am also the lead IT Security administrator for seven
different JPL Information Technology Security Plans, containing over
1000 computer systems. I am responsible for ensuring that NASA's
strict computer security guidelines are enforced. This includes both
the documentation and implementation of the necessary IT security
measures, as well as interfacing with JPL's IT security system.
These responsibilities include patching system software, monitoring
logs, maintaining the operability of network services (OpenSSH, NFS,
NIS), and implementing firewall rules via JPL's PAR system.
Oct. 1995 - August 2000 Five years
working with SupplyEdge (formerly Cogent Software) of Pasadena in
progressively more responsible positions. Jobs titles included
Technical Support, IT Consultant, Web Designer, and Systems
Administrator. Originally I worked with Solaris on Sparc, Ultra, and
Enterprise class servers, but I was largely responsible for helping
the company transition from slow and expensive Sun hardware to fast
and cheap Linux systems, saving the company thousands of dollars.
SupplyEdge was a mission critical operation, where all systems needed
to be available 24/7.
